Leveraging the Skeleton?

When you think of your skeleton, you might picture it as the sturdy scaffolding that holds you upright. But your skeleton is so much more than that. It’s a dynamic system of levers, with joints acting as pivot points, allowing you to move efficiently and safely through the world. These levers are classified into three types:

  1. Class 1 Levers: The fulcrum is between the effort and the load (e.g., nodding your head—the joint at the base of your skull is the fulcrum).
  2. Class 2 Levers: The load is between the effort and the fulcrum (e.g., rising onto the ball of your foot—the ball of your foot acts as the fulcrum, the calf muscles provide the effort through the lifting of your heel, and your body weight is the load).
  3. Class 3 Levers: The effort is between the load and the fulcrum (e.g., bending your arm at the elbow—your elbow joint is the fulcrum, your biceps provide the effort, and the weight of your forearm and hand is the load).

These levers allow us to perform everything from small, precise movements to powerful actions like jumping or lifting. By understanding how your skeleton works, you can move with more ease, reduce strain, and improve your overall balance.

Why does it matter to our balance? 

Efficient movement depends on leveraging your skeleton to work in harmony with gravity, maximize proprioception, and utilize counterbalance—concepts we’ve explored in this series:

  • Proprioception gives you the body awareness to know where your levers are in space.
  • Gravity provides the constant force your skeleton pushes against to create movement.
  • Counterbalance ensures that as one part of your body moves, another adjusts to maintain stability.

For example, when you reach forward to pick something up, your hip joints act as fulcrums, your pelvis shifts back as your head shifts forward to counterbalance, and your proprioceptive sense helps you coordinate the appropriate level of force in the movement without falling over. Without these elements working together, even simple tasks could become precarious.

Signs of Inefficient Lever Use

When your skeleton isn’t being leveraged effectively, you might notice:

  • Overuse of muscles in place of skeletal alignment, leading to fatigue and strain.

  2. Explore Class 1 Levers: Sit in a chair and slowly nod your head. Feel how the joint at the base of your skull acts as the fulcrum, and your head becomes the load.
  3. Test Class 2 Levers: Stand on your tiptoes and lower back down slowly. Feel how the balls f your feet act as the fulcrum while your calf muscles lift your body weight.
  4. Activate Class 3 Levers: Hold a small object in your hand and bend your arm at the elbow. Notice how the joint works to lift the load using your biceps.
  5. Whole-Body Integration: Try a simple squat. Pay attention to how multiple joints (ankles, knees, and hips) coordinate to create smooth, balanced movement.
